Shimano Di2 – “the intelligent drivetrain”

Electric drivetrain with the best of brains and brawn.

The revolutionary Di2 shifting system solves the challenges drivetrains present to the power-delivery equation in cycling. Di2 gives you instant, accurate, lighting-fast shifts the first and every time, at the push of a button. Even in the most extreme conditions, shifting is precise and controlled. You can change gear even under heavy load while climbing or accelerating. With Di2, you are in complete control.

Cycling is an exercise in physics; the power you produce by pedaling is transmitted through the bicycle into forward movement, minus the friction of pushing your body, your clothes, and your bicycle, through the air.

It doesn't matter if you're riding in competition, ripping up a mountain-bike trail, or trying to set a new Strava record on your commute to work, you want as much of the power that you give the pedals to go into forward motion.

Did you know that the drivetrain (chainrings, sprockets, derailleurs, chain) can be a major source of lost power? Misaligned equipment, improper gearing selection, and imprecise mechanics can all siphon off the energy you’re putting into your rides. That’s why Shimano spends so much time perfecting its drivetrains.

Less friction = more power

The Di2 system is a series of technologically advanced components engineered to give you a smooth, fast, and almost frictionless drivetrain. To tackle the premature wear and power-robbing friction of a misaligned drivetrain (that awful mechanical rapid-fire clicking coming from your chain when you pedal) Di2 automatically senses the position of the chain while in gear and trims the front derailleur into the optimal position.

Big shifts made easy

Di2 does more than just cutting friction. Take shifting for example. Need to shift while scrambling up a steel hill? No problem! The rear derailleur is balanced to provide instant shifts and can change gears for you no matter how much load you put on the drivetrain.

Shifts don’t always happen one at a time. Di2 is programmable to allow you to shift through multiple gears at once by holding down the shifting button. Perfect for wide gearing swings like the transitions from gulley to switchback on a trail ride or from off the back to chasing back on in a road race.

Let Di2 do the thinking while you do the riding

Could shifting be even simpler though? Shimano has been thinking a lot about how Di2 can have a positive impact on mountain-biking. That thinking led to Synchroshift. Available for XTR levers only, you can program your shifting to use just two buttons to change from your smallest gear to your biggest - through all your chainrings - without having to do the math in your head.

Imagine this scenario; you’re on a rolling terrain. You're somewhere in the middle of your gearing. You hit a steep climb. Instead of thinking 'Do I need a small chainring and something in the middle of the cassette or should I go middle-ring and largest rear cog?' With Synchroshift, you just keep shifting and Di2 automatically senses when your gearing choice requires a change in chainring and handles the thinking for you.

Complete control at your fingertips

The intelligence in the drivetrain doesn’t stop at the bike. Di2’s lithium-ion gives you days of riding before a recharge and comes in either internal or external mounted options and includes new junction wiring that cleans up the harness. There’s a special PC interface available for charging the battery and customizing the system. You also have the ability to make Di2 your control center for the other electronic devices on your bike, like Garmin or MIO navigation systems and FOX electronic suspension.

What else? We’ve enhanced the feedback in the multi-control levers for both road and mountain-bikes to give you finer control over your drivetrain. We've improved the ergonomics to give you easier access to the shifting buttons. And we cleaned up the wiring with a new single-wire E-tube connection that allows you to add on satellite shifters (bar end shifter on your time-trial bar ends anyone?).

The whole system was created with Shimano’s reputation for durability in mind but even if the unfortunate happens and you fall while riding, Di2's crash protection automatically moves the rear derailleur out of harm's way. Now that’s an intelligent shift.
